Furlong & Fathom makes the world's data easy to see. We turn trusted public statistics into short animated stories (rankings that race, maps that change, comparisons that unfold over decades) and pair them with coded simulations that are simply nice to watch.
Why the name?
A furlong is an old British measure of distance, still heard at every racecourse. A fathom measures the depth of the sea, and to fathom something is to understand it. We try to do both: measure the world, and help make sense of it.
How we work
- Credible sources only. We use official and well-established publishers such as the United Nations, the World Bank, NASA, the OECD and Our World in Data. Each source is shown on screen and linked on the page.
- Numbers as published. We don't invent or adjust figures. Projections, estimates and calculated values are always labelled.
- No opinions, no politics. We show what the data says and leave the conclusions to you.
- Every video has an interactive page here where you can pause, explore and download the data we used.
